ASD members and supporters, left-progressive activist,

The crisis of repression today is in Mexico, a country increasingly engaged in the struggle for social justice.

As you may have heard (no thanks to the mainstream media) one of the most monumental grassroots movements is going on in the capital city of the state of Oaxaca, city of Oaxaca led by striking teachers and supported by broad sectors and a people's assembly... all aimed a bringing down the repressive and corrupt regime of PRI governor Ulisis Ortiz Ruiz.

Rumors of attacks by government troops and paramilitaries have swirled for the last 10 days - now it has started and off to a deadly start will the death of 4 and injury of 26 more, the jailing of leaders, etc. The deaths included the assassination of Brad Will of Indy Media New York a well-known videographer and IMC journalist. He taped his own death. Read more below.

Start calling our allies.

Sunday's demonstration is co-sponsored by members of:

Activist San Diego
San Diego Indy Media
Organic Collective
Oaxacan organizations
Schools for Chiapas
San Diego Socialist Unity Network

We would be DEMANDING:

End to the repression and killings!
Support APPO and the striking teachers!
Immediate removal of Oaxacan PRI governor Ulisis Ortiz Ruiz!

*Call to Action Across the US Against Mexican Consulates*

ATTN Companer@s!

This is a call to action to remember Brad, show solidarity with the
teachers and protesters of Oaxaca who are under attack, and an effort to
interrupt the invasion of Oaxaca that Fox is beginning.

On Monday morning, October 30th, Mexican consulates around the US will
attempt to open their doors, to continue business as usual. But they will
not succeed in doing so, because we will be there to stop them. At every
embassy, at every consulate, we will be there, to remember Brad, to
support the teacher's strike, to fight alongside Oaxacans in their
struggle for self-determination and autonomy from the corrupt Mexican
government. This call to action against consulates is in line with what
companer@s from the APPO have already called for earlier this week before
this shooting.

We already know of many groups who are planning for Monday, and every day
following if necessary. Please spread this call to action as wide as
possible. Spread the word: to activists, teachers, students, earth
firsters, latino social services centers, places where day laborers
gather,
anti-racist action groups, food not bombs chapters, peace and justice
organizations, Zapatista solidarity groups, anarchist people of color
chapters, people you work with, your neighbors. Copy and paste this the
whole world wide, and do so quickly. And please translate a version of
this to Spanish as well, and spread it around!

A directory of all the locations of all the Mexican consulates in the US
and Canada can be found at:

OAXACA CITY UNDER ATTACK FROM MEXICAN GOVERNMENT: NYC Indymedia Journalist Killed
http://sandiego.indymedia.org/en/2006/10/119891.shtml

Oct. 27th: A shooting occurred today in Oaxaca City, Mexico, leaving New York City Indymedia journalist Bradley Will dead after being shot in the chest. He died before reaching the hospital, according to La Jornada. A photographer from the newspaper Milenio Diario, who was at Will's side, was shot in the foot and reported injured, his status unknown.

Radio APPO, radio station of the Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca, is reporting truckloads of armed paramilitaries entering the city. They are calling for people to reinforce the thousands of barricades that have been constructed for months as part of the statewide teachers' strike and popular uprising that has demanded the removal of PRI governor Ulisis Ortiz Ruiz.

OAXACA CITY: In the face of a renewed civil strike established in this capital city yesterday by the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), groups of gunmen linked to three municipal mayors from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) launched a “cleansing” of the barricades and building occupations that opponents of PRI Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz have been maintaining for months.

The result: three people killed, eleven wounded, two disappeared, one detained by the Ministerial Police and hundreds of shell casings left scattered along the streets as a testimony to the 21 shootouts that occurred yesterday in the city.

Commentary from Oaxaca

October 28, 2006

President Vicente Fox, through his Secretary of Internal Affairs Carlos Abascal, has authorized the entry of the Federal Preventive Police (PFP in its Spanish initials) into Oaxaca, in direct response to the events of October 27 in Oaxaca. Following a declaration by the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO) to launch an all-out work stoppage and boycott to force the hand of governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz (known as “URO”), Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) supporters, both police and private individuals, assaulted the population in several different areas of the city on Friday. The result, according to the Radio Universidad, was four dead, thirty wounded. The dead have now been identified as Emilio Alonso Fabián, Bradley Will and Eudocia Olivera Díaz. The fourth reported death, of Esteban Zurita López, is at the center of accusations by both sides of the conflict, with each blaming the other.

Airplanes full of PFP officers and riot gear have already arrived, with the police now gathered at a nearby military base, reports the national daily El Universal.

confusion seems to reign in all the protest "gatherings" i have attended this year. people who are not aligned toward a single purpose and who would never be seen in the company of each other set up booths as if it were a street fair.

a PROTEST is a PROTEST not some goddamn concession. money raising should not be permitted at a protest. sell your signs and slogans elsewhere. sell your ideology and re-affirm your beliefs in freedom with your voices and your bodies if necessary. WE SHALL OVERCOME,but only if we stay true to the exercise of FREEdom of SPEECH. SPEECH IS NOT FREE IF YOU PAY FOR A PERMIT AND TELL THE ESTABLISHMENT WHEN AND WHERE YOU ARE GOING TO BE - that is a block party.

If you listen, post a comment below letting me know what you like, what you don't, if the show should be shorter or longer or if you have an idea for a new name. Anything would be good, just so I know that someone is listening. thanks.
